Upper Gastrointestinal Fiberoptic Endoscopy of Recurrent Epigastric Pain in Peditatric Patients


Abstract
A clinical study was made on 41 cases of recurrent epigastric pain by UGI series and endoscopy at Dep. of Ped. of Donggug Univ. Hospital during 19 months from October 19E8 to May 1990.
The results were as follows
1) In sex and age distribution of recurrent epigastric pain, the male to female ratio was about 1 : 1.16(male 19 cases : female :22 cases) and age distribution was 7.3% below 5 years, 29.3% in 6-10 years and 63.4% in 11-15 years.
2) Nausea and vomiting in associated symtoms and signs with recurrent epigastric pain were the most(53.7%) and followed indigestion(26.8%), periumbilical pain(19.5%), hematemesis, melena.
3) Among UGI series of 28 cases and endoscopy of 38 cases, abnormal finding was revealed in 6 cases(21.4%) and 14 cases(31.6%) respectively. Endoscopy of 5 cases revealed radiologically normal finding revealed mucosal lesion.
4) Endoscopy of 38 cases revealed mucosal lesion in 11 cases(28.9%) and ulcerative lesion in 3 cases(7.9%)
5) There were no complications related to endoscopy procedures
In conclusion, upper gastrointestinal fiberoptic endoscopy can be performed safely and endow more accurate diagnosis in pediatric patients of upper gastrointestinal symptoms and signs.
